American Filipino stories at the center of the event | News, Sports, Jobs

The stories of four Maui residents will be the focus of a free virtual event celebrating Philippine American History Month at 6 p.m. Wednesday via Zoom.

The Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation event, “Mga Larawan in Kwentuhan” (photographs and stories), will be a light conversational story featuring four members of the Maui community and their Filipino American stories of immigration, Filipino growth, and overcoming adversity. They are:

• Vernon Patao, two-time Olympian, over 25 veteran firefighter and owner of HI Performance Athletics.

• Virgie Cantorna, registered nurse and clinical psychologist, as well as author of the book “Dark inside.”

• CJ Ancheta, math teacher at Lahainaluna High School and director of the Maui Regional Science Olympiad.

• Liezl Oandasan, community organizer and executive housekeeper at Sheraton Maui.

Mayor Michael Victorino and the county recognized October as Philippine and United States History Month and hoisted the Philippine flag in the county building for the entire month.

The event is free and will be streamed live on Facebook. It will be hosted by Kit Furukawa and Wayne Aguiran.
